T-shirt #352 - Cub Fan - Bart Man

Baseball season is upon us, and I am making my nefarious plans for my Fantasy Baseball Empire with my first draft tonight.

Actually, I am going to wing it. I don't have time to prepare my own stats log and analysis, so I am going with the work of Baseball Forecaster and my own reasonable intuition for this league, in which I placed eighth of twelve last year. I think I can beat that record.

I did not win any of my leagues last year. The best I finished was second out of eight. I finished fourth in the league I run (TIGER TOWNE), third of eight in a league run by my friend Craig, and sixth of twelve in a New England league. I was kicked out of a rotisserie league run by a crazy madman, so I decided to reboot his league with the other players who may well be disgruntled.

Today, I am renewing the "hiatus shirt" mandate in order to possibly catch up by Monday on the seven incomplete blog entries found elsewhere via my main address. They are now sufficiently buried so as not be so persistent to my psyche's wellness, and yet, I know they are there.

Several gravitational anomalies aligned in the galaxy to produce this blog, which originally had been schedule as not one other but two other shirts.

And then I saw this: 365 Days of KirbyTech, Day 66: The Finkatronic Ray, which reminded me of my Cub Fan Bart Man T-shirt as a herald (get it? If you're a comic geek given my picture of Homer-Galactus below, you will get it.) of SPRING and BASEBALL SEASON.

I have given shouts to both the BULLY SAYS COMICS OUGHTA BE FUN and the wonderful Pencil Ink blog, and this morning I decided to let those bloggers know of my appreciation for their efforts with comments on their sites.

Bully is doing a 365 Days of Kirby Tech series, which, yesterday, manifested as tech from the Simpsons comic. Wonderful stuff. Here's one of the pics he shared from Panels from "Captain Cupcake and Pieboy!" in Simpsons Super Spectacular #5 (July 2007), script by Mike W. Barr, pencils by James Lloyd, inks by Andrew Pepoy, colors by Rick Reese, letters by Karen Bates.

Meanwhile, I decided to post -- pretty much -- just pictures today. So here, we go (with a little text in between, D'oh!!) Okay, Don't have a cow, man.

There are 21 entries (including today's) in my Baseball category, which is a sport name that -- as you may or may not know -- I like to deify with a capital letter.

I featured the shirt that goes with this hat in T-shirt #182.

Here's some text from that blog:

T-shirt #80: Detroit Tigers est. 1901 may be my best  Baseball post so far, though T-shirt #115: Chicago Cubs est. 1876 also shares a great deal of good Baseball stuff. I love the sense of history. I love the stats. I love my teams.

But it's all best summed up by this quote from the great Ernie Harwell:

"Baseball is a ballet without music. Drama without words. A carnival without kewpie dolls. Baseball is continuity. Pitch to pitch. Inning to inning. Season to season."

When I saw this T-shirt, I had to have one. I like the Simpsons, but I would not characterize myself as a massive Simpsons fan like some folks.

"Don't Have a Cow, Harry!" refers to Harry Caray, former announcer for the Chicago Cubs, who always used to say "Holy Cow!" and since Bart Simpson often says "Don't Have a Cow, Man" then this is a great joke connection.

Harry Caray died in 1998. Here's a little weird irony: in the 2003 playoffs, one of the Cubs few post-season appearances in the last 20 years. In October of 2003, the Cubs were playing in the National League Championship series against the Florida Marlins (who won the World Series that year), there's one incident that is defined as the losing moment for that Cubs team, preventing them from advancing to the World Series. It has come to be known as the STEVE BARTMAN INCIDENT.

Lifelong Cubs fan Steve Bartman interfered with a catch by Cubs outfielder Moisés Alou. Had Alou caught that ball for the out, the Cubs would have been four outs from the National League title and the World Series. As it turned out, the Cubs lost the game and eventually the series.

Get it? The shirt is "Bart Man" and is from Cubs merchandise no later than 1998 and possibly earlier, and yet it foreshadows the infamous "villain" of the Cubs' 2003 loss. Really, it's a sad thing. Steve Bartman is a well meaning Cubs fan who got caught up in the excitement of a ball coming his way and made a mistake, like we all do (make mistakes that is). It just so happened to be a mistake that is believed to have cost the Cubs a National League title and a shot at winning the World Series.

Remember how in yesterday's blog I mentioned saving time for date night with my lovely wife? Well, here's our sashimi/sushi dinner from Friday the 7th of March using a gift certificate given to use for Christmas.

As I count down to March 22nd, when it all began last year for this blog, there's going to be quite a few Baseball shirts (which if you recall I deify with a capital letter). Since I already shared all but one of my Detroit Tigers shirts, and I am saving that last Tigers shirt for the final week, you will probably see several CUBS T-shirts, as I have quite a few remaining.

Also, given that I am still behind, I am trying to avoid falling farther behind by not posting any more incomplete entries. To accomplish this goal, I have to keep it short and simple.

Baseball's spring training has begun. Players have reported and games begin soon.

I am starting to get excited again for Baseball season.

I am a bit of a stats nut, as I have mentioned before, so getting ready for Baseball season again means pouring over stats and planning my FANTASY BASEBALL TEAMS.

USA Today did a smart thing by hiring Ron Shandler and launching its own exclusive chats service with

BASEBALL HQ.

I am a subscriber both to this service, which means I receive the stats-tastic excellence of the BASEBALL FORECASTER book, AND a subscriber to SPORTS WEEKLY, which used to be Baseball Weekly, which I can now read on my tablet as well as in paper form.

I have spent many long hours considering complex measures of hitting and pitching to optimize playing Fantasy Baseball games which I do for free and for which I earn no money. Seems a bit crazy. I love it.

A friend of my wife's and mine is trying to engage in political debate on Facebook, and I care for very little for that debate or politics compared to Baseball.

Time for Baseball.

Let's PLAY BALL!!


THE BLOG'S FUTURE

Lastly, I have made an executive decision about the blog about which I plan to expound in future entries. This decision has to do with focusing almost exclusively on shirts I already owned when I started the blog to finish out my remaining, as of today, 24 entries. I over-indulged in asking for gifts of T-shirts for Christmas and my Birthday, and I now have far more T-shirts than I need to complete my remaining 24 daily entries.

So what's next? For the next three weeks and three days, I will continue to post with T-shirts from my collection for the most part from the time I started the blog. I cannot promise that I will not be inspired to share a new shirt, but I want to take my time with many of these longer essays that I have been planning and do not seem to be able to complete, especially since I am having trouble even keeping up with short to moderate daily entries.

Once I reach March 22nd, daily entries will cease. I will begin to work on these longer entries on the newer shirts and the remaining shirts that do not get posted and share them with you on a weekly basis. At least that's the plan. I may get inspired  and post more often. I may also take a break before the next T-shirt post. I suspect I will be a bit worn out after posting one T-shirt a day for 365 days straight!!

I am also going to devote myself more regularly to fiction writing, which will become part of my new blog and Internet presence post the year of T-shirts. This will also mean more regular blog entries (short bits) from the source blog, SENSE OF DOUBT.

Happy Monday to you all if you happened to stop by here on a Monday.

Grading robot is at full power plowing through two sets of final grades for three classes and then the normal week of grading all to be finished by Friday, though the final grades are due tomorrow. So this did not go up first in the morning because of Grading Robot's activity.

I just finished one set of final grades (due tomorrow) with one set to go, and as you can see, I am very excited for the Lions game tonight. Monday night football. GO LIONS!

Do I really need to discuss this KUDL shirt in any depth? It's the retro re-issue of our 2007 design that we did this year, like my T-shirt #237.

I may take an Ultimate hiatus. I am not sure how many Ultimate shirts I have left, but I am pretty sure that I am out of KUDL shirts. I have featured 29 such shirts (including this one), which is quite a few, especially since KUDL has only been active eight years.

Short entry today, but I have a few things already set up in tomorrow's entry, so it should be a good one.

I have shared about my fantasy sports play before.

I had a good week last week. I won in all six of my fantasy basketball games, with one I had a huge comeback victory on the last day of the week. I am inserting screen shots of the matchup going into Sunday and the final result.

I fell to a horrible 6-9 in picking football spreads for the week, while my colleagues all did much better than I did.

Fantasy football is not decided yet, so I may report back, but I had at least one HUGE win, so I am happy with that.

As you can see in this NO MERCY league, I was down 3-12 going into Sunday games. I had more players active than my opponent so I had hopes that I might pull out a close win. Given the small number of players he had going Sunday, I am surprised to keep under in the turnover and personal foul categories, in which the lower number takes the match. I did not think I would catch him in rebounds, but I was hoping to edge him in several other categories, which as you can see, I did. This was a good one and in large part due to my skill as a player in terms of my draft and my waiver additions. It's also nice to see a comeback as he had more games through the week, but I made it up on the final day.

The other thing I want to share today is a group discussion from Good Reads with Night Film author Marisha Pessl. I have already written about Night Filmas I mention in the message I posted to Good Reads. Marisha did not respond to my message, but I did not expect her to do so. Surely she read it as there were not that many messages. You can surely find the group if you are on Good Reads and you are interested. Once again, I want to promote Marisha's book. It was excellent!!

LOVED it!! And I think it's quite a rare thing to come to the book via my wife's request that I read it and start on our anniversary (as in immediately) as a gift to her. One quick download to my Kindle and off I went. We were in Hawaii on vacation at the time, so I managed to read much much more on long plane rides and soaks in the hot tub.

As I wrote yesterday, I am taking a shirt hiatus.... ha ha, that's a typo. I meant "short" hiatus. It's not really a shirt hiatus as there are still shirts.

So light on content for a few days.

Yesterday was the necessary day of rest for "self-care" though after I graded two sets of assignments and did a bunch of daily work. Also, though I had some good picks (Vikings! Cardinals!), I am 6-9 total for the week and only because I went 2-1 with my picks for Thanksgiving Day. But I am sweeping fantasy basketball (except for the team I let Yahoo draft).

Oh and the Pistons won big. So between reading a bunch of comics, quality time with my wife, loving times with the puppy, I am happy. Though now it's back to work, hence the content-light hiatus.




















Mad Dog was one of the most fun tournaments in which I ever played. I miss it. But I especially liked teaming up with Midland folks in 2002. It's one of my best Ultimate tournament memories. Plus, I have this nifty shirt. In fact, I may have TWO. I like that I have an Ultimate shirt that features Scooby Doo. Great people!

T-shirt #248 - Detroit Lions

I am writing this as the Detroit Lions play the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. They are currently winning 21-17, but Stafford has thrown two interceptions.

I realized I did not have a Lions shirt, so I bought this one the other day.

This is a must win game as the Lions should have won last week against Pittsburgh, and they are in a tie for first in the NFC North with the Chicago Bears with the Green Bay Packers only one game back, though currently losing at home to the Minnesota Vikings.

The most important thing for me as a fan is for the Lions to win this game today. But the second most important thing is for them to win by 10 or more points.

You see, I pick games by the point spreads with a small group of friends, one of whom I have never met in person, and the group has never met each other in person. The common element is me as I know all of the core group of four, but there's a fifth guy who is a friend of one of the others, and he's the one I have not met in person.

The Bucs just took the lead on a heave of a pass by the rookie quarter back. Damn.

So far on the season, I am 74-82-7. I have won among our group four times but only once as a solo win. The leader, Jason, is 80-75-7, followed by my friend Dave Mandrick at 77-78-7, my friend Bill at 76-79-7, and I am tied with Bill's friend Jay.


Okay, so as I was saying, I pick by spreads. Here's my picks today. So far I am doing all right, though in the time it took my to write this, the Lions lost.

I hate missing that Thursday game.

NFL Tallies 2013

I love this close season with our picks!! I also love that I recovered from two horrible weeks to have a winning week, especially because I changed my Monday night pick to Carolina at the last minute. I should listen to the gut. That's the lesson here. Though the gut failed me with KC, the Chargers, the Packers, the Jaguars, and most importantly THE LIONS. Terrible.

Crazy ending. Jay, Dave, and I tie for first with records of 7-5-3 for the week. Bill and Jason tie at 6-6-3 for second. Three of us gain one game on Jason and Bill and we are all close, the largest margin being six games.

In points, Bill, Jay, and Dave are all tied with 43 with Jason and me just behind at 42.

Some good games for Week 12, especially an easy pick for Thursday night!

Greetings KUDLers, Though many of the games from last week have playoff implications and good elements to feature, I have to lead this week with a big YIPPEE because my BABY FISH BEAT LOUNGING LEOPOLD!!!! My Baby Fish handed Lindsey's Leopold just her second loss of the season, and we clinched our PLAYOFF BERTH! Though I do not usually crib from the Yahoo recaps, it expresses our come from behind victory, so well. In short, going into Monday's game, Baby Fish were down 208-194. The Fish rallied and schooled to a 215-208 win. Yahoo: "Baby Fish Mouth (6-5, 2,420.00 points) stole one from Lounging Leopold (9-2, 2,564.00 points) 215.00 - 208.00 in a back-and-forth battle. They were led by Drew Brees who had 50.00 points. Baby Fish Mouth scored first and went into Sunday in front 26.50 - 0. They lost the handle after the early Sunday games and trailed 98.50 - 86.00. After the late Sunday games, the lead went back the other way 183.00 - 146.00. By the end of the Sunday night game, the lead flipped yet again and Lounging Leopold went up 208.00 - 194.00. Baby Fish Mouth finally took the matchup in a Mondaynight comeback, led by Brandon LaFell with 14.50 points. With this win, Baby Fish Mouth clinches a playoff berth. " First place doesn't change with this win. Leopold still regins supreme at 9-2. But Favre and Zissou (who both won) are breathing in her fur one game back at 8-3. My Baby Fish are solidly in fourth now at 6-5. Lightning lost this week to Favre, but Dave clinches a playoff spot in fifth place, just one game off Baby Fish at 5-6, and with the distinction of having beaten my Baby Fish two weeks ago. Other news from last week is Favre who logged the biggest margin of victory of the week with a 63 point win over Lightning. Though this victory does not win biggest margin for the season, which so far also goes to Favre for a 115 point win over Discount in Week Three. Mosquitoes are in sixth right now and can clinch a playoff spot this week despite playing Leopold. Seventh place Discount would need a win over my Baby Fish and Mosquitoes loss. Likewise, Foamy who plays Favre would be in the same position, though Foamy holds a tie break advantage having logged his second win of the season in a strong 275.5-218 win last week over Discount. Even with either Foamy or Discount winning, I think Mosquitoes are a virtual lock for the sixth spot. Playoffs start Dec. 3rd with six teams, five of which have clinched. Right now, Leopold and Favre would have first round byes with Baby Fish meeting Lightining and Zissou play Mosquitoes (assuming they clinch). But this could change. Zissou has a shot at second. If Leopold were to lose again (unlikely), things could get crazy. Lightning could flip with Baby Fish in the 4th and 5th slots, but this would do little to affect playoffs. Today is my day off. I do not get that many days, and I wish I could report that it had been a completely work-free day; however, I had to grade all morning. But I managed to complete the set of grades that needed to be done in time to rest and relax while watching the Detroit Lions game. There's a storm, so I lost signal for a short period of time. But I have managed to read several comic books, a report that I will delve into in a future blog. In fact, most of the content in today's post was going to be part of yesterday's post, but I am trying to compartmentalize better and to keep my blog entries to a shorter average length than many of the gargantuan entries of many of the previous two hundred and forty entries.

THE BLOG JOURNEY

I started writing about The Blog Journey the other day and created a category for the subject. So far, each entry (two) has focused on the Blog Journey and how I have come to work on this project. I found it very edifying that yesterday's shirt for the Veronica Mars Kickstarter coincided with my cancer diagnosis in a way that I did not anticipate when I started writing the entry. I did not remember that my discovery of and funding of the Kickstarter came the same day as learning I had prostate cancer.

My therapist asked me if the momentum shifted in regards to the blog after my surgery. I believe I have mentioned this before, but I have a new point to make. Yes, the momentum shifted. There was less of a sense of urgency. Before the surgery, I was driven by the feeling that I had to get it all in before that dead end date of August 16th. I had this quite irrational feeling that the surgery was the end of my life and that if I did not accomplish certain things before the surgery, I would not be able to finish the things after. Rationally, I knew this was not true. But like I wrote, it was an irrational feeling. Also, I felt as if I had permission to do certain bucket list type things because I had cancer, was having surgery, and so I deserved these things. The sense of urgency came in at trying to get the things I was permitted to do done in time. This urgency also propelled the blog forward. Would I have time to generate all the content I wanted to generate in time?

Since the surgery that feeling of urgency has changed, but the bucket list has remained. After all, we went to Hawaii because of that list and today's shirt comes from that trip. Since the surgery, I have a renewed sense of the need for the journey of self-discovery and self-definition that this blog represents. Today's shirt factors well into this journey and this self analysis process. The T-shirt's message may need to be incorporated into the Rules of Chris.

High views for the week came on November 11th when the blog received 87 page views. The second spike came on Friday with 67 views. Today, others had shown hits, such as yesterday's Veronica Mars entry, T-shirt #100: Kalamazoo College, and T-shirt #45: Star Wars: The Evolution of Darth Vader.

For the month, and I think this is interesting as I am not sure why it hit so much, T-shirt #220: Star Trek Red Shirt Gift, scored the most page views. I suspect this one was popular because it was shared with all the people included in the photo and shared by my wife who took the picture.

I am happy to see the post on my Dad score well. I am very proud of that entry. Nightwing and Batgirl continue to be popular, I assume, because of DC Comics related searching of the Internet. I find it very interesting that the Powell's Books entry has drawn a lot of views. Is it the Jim Leyland content? The content on Night Film? Or my last blog recap like this one?

In terms of all time most frequented pages, the Nightwing page bumped the What Would Kirk Do page that I dedicated to Trayvon Martin. I am happy to see the Nightwing love, but I am sad to see what I feel is an important issue losing ground to a comic book character.

RANDOM FACTS

Fantasy sports recap - I am doing very well with fantasy sports this week. I have started basketball and actually joined more leagues to expand to six leagues. I am starting to be more competitive with the league I let Yahoo's terrible AI draft. I do not care as much about fantasy football. I much prefer the daily challenge of basketball and Baseball.

And so far today, I am picking football games better than last week's terrible record (4-11). I already have more wins in the early games than total last week = 5-2-2.

The storm - We're having high winds and thunderstorms. As usual, the most severe stuff veers north and south of us.

Time with my parents - Spent quality time with my parents yesterday and did some work on my stuff in their basement. This is a sign that things are better in balance in my life, and I am able to fit in more things. It's also made possible by hiring a friend to be a dog sitter for Satchel, so I can be away for the day.

Wife at home - Liesel stayed home from work today, and so I am having quality time with my love, which is excellent.

Kimchi update - The Kimchi is a little extra salty but it's nearly pickled. One more day on the counter and then to the fridge.

Day of rest - Today is my day of rest as I wrote earlier. I am keen to return to my reading.

DORIS LESSING HAS DIED - Sadness. A very good writer whose books I have not explored nearly well enough.
